Welcome to the East Midlands North Trauma & Orthopaedic Training Programme.

As someone who completed both Core Surgical Training and Higher Surgical Training within the East Midlands, I have experienced first-hand the outstanding quality of training, mentorship, and opportunities this region provides. The East Midlands played a defining role in my own surgical career, and I remain incredibly proud to now serve as Training Programme Director for a rotation that continues to build upon an already strong national reputation.

Our programme offers trainees a broad and balanced experience across both major teaching hospitals and high-performing district general hospitals. This provides excellent exposure to the full breadth of modern Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery while maintaining a supportive and trainee-focused environment. The strength of the rotation lies not only in the surgical experience and educational opportunities, but also in the people — dedicated trainers, supportive colleagues, and friendships that often last a lifetime.

The East Midlands has long been recognised for delivering high-quality orthopaedic training, structured teaching programmes and excellent research opportunities. Trainees benefit from regular protected teaching, strong peer support networks, and opportunities to engage in regional and national research and leadership activities.

One of the unique advantages of training in this region is its geography. The rotation provides varied clinical exposure while allowing trainees to maintain stability in their personal lives, with excellent transport links and affordable living across vibrant cities and welcoming communities.

Above all, we aim to create an environment where trainees can thrive — clinically, academically, and personally. We are committed to continually evolving the programme, listening to trainee feedback, and ensuring we prepare the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons to the highest possible standard.
